We are several users who shared in a forum a curious and unpleasant noise at the rear of the Guzzi V85 TT. More specifically in the shock absorber area. It is a squeal that clearly indicates a lack of lubrication in some area of ​​the shock absorber. It could well be in its anchor points or in the stem. So I decided to dismantle it to see how it works and resolve the error.

Removing the rear shock absorber from the motorcycle is very simple if you have the center stand installed. You just have to loosen the two bolts that hold it to the chassis and swingarm-cardan and you can take it out. Once outside, I observed that the housing of what I thought were silent blocks were actually aluminum covers that covered some seals and that these, once outside, gave way not to silent blocks but to ball joints. responsible for absorbing or mitigating the lateral oscillations caused by its transverse "V" engine. But my surprise was that that kneecap must have been well protected by its seals and yet, I found it dry and with a layer of rust that, when cleaned, revealed a polished kneecap in some areas due to rubbing.

Procedure

I got ready to disassemble the 4 caps and the 4 seals and thoroughly clean both the caps and seals and the ball joints themselves with brake cleaner. Once all the rust and dried grease was gone, I liberally greased the ball joints, seals and caps with sea ​​blubber. With everything greased, we can now reassemble the rear shock in its place and clean the excess grease with a rag. With this maintenance operation you can ensure proper functioning of the rear shock absorber and avoid major problems as well as unpleasant noise.

Conclusion

In my opinion, the anchoring system of this shock absorber has seemed a bit delicate and requires some attention, especially if you are going to practice off road with the motorcycle since it is easier for dust to enter. From now on we will have to be especially careful when washing the motorcycle and ensure that not too much water enters that area, let alone under pressure. and to the minimum that we hear that squeak, disassemble, clean and grease the area. I think that perhaps it would have been better to mount a silent block instead of a ball joint and I don't know why Moto Guzzi made this choice, but I want to think that it could be to protect the stem and its seal from the engine's own vibrations.
