HOW EXCESSIVE ENGINE HEAT AFFECTS EFI SYSTEMS

We all know that when an engine gets hot, it produces less horsepower, but what causes this? To generate optimal power, your motorcycle's EFI system must provide a precise air-fuel mixture after processing data from sensors located on the engine. This continuous process ensures optimal engine performance. A closer look at this process reveals that EFI-equipped engines use ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensing) to send instantaneous coolant and engine temperature data to the ECU. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) uses this information to continuously monitor your motorcycle's engine temperature and make instant adjustments to the ignition timing and air/fuel mixture (as a percentage of +/-) from the predetermined optimal air/fuel map.

When the ECT sensor detects excessive engine heat and transmits this data to the ECU, the ECU automatically retards the timing and enriches the air/fuel mixture. This is done to reduce the engine's operating temperature to its optimum. It's a pre-programmed safety feature and is how your motorcycle was designed to protect itself from heat-related engine failure.

When the ECU enters failsafe mode, it directly impacts the power your engine can generate. This is largely dependent on the engine temperature at any given time, which is why monitoring engine temperature is becoming one of the most important aspects of engine tuning. By reducing the engine core temperature, your machine's power characteristics are optimized, and the ECU doesn't force the engine to reduce its power output to protect itself from overheating.

Our opinion

Engines are running worse and worse due to emissions regulations. These regulations require less fuel to be injected into the mixture, thus violating the correct stoichiometric ratio. Furthermore, exhaust systems are being clogged with filters and catalytic converters, causing the engine to overheat excessively. Any assistance we can provide to prevent this overheating is welcome. This oversized kit increases coolant flow without causing cavitation, thereby maintaining operating temperature without relying as heavily on the motorcycle's electric fan.
